AI SEO agency: what it does and how to choose one
What an AI SEO agency actually does in 2026, how the work differs from traditional SEO, and the questions that separate real expertise from an old package with AI added to the name.
Key takeaways
- An AI SEO agency works to get your business cited in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and assistants such as ChatGPT, not only ranked in the list of results.
- Google says there are no special requirements for its AI features. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, so technical SEO still comes first.
- AI answers tend to quote pages that answer one question directly, with specifics, from a source that looks trustworthy.
- Judge an agency on how it measures AI visibility and enquiries, and walk away from anyone who guarantees AI citations.
Search no longer ends with a list of links. Google answers many questions with an AI Overview at the top of the page, AI Mode handles longer back-and-forth research, and more buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a shortlist before they visit a single website. An AI SEO agency helps your business show up inside those answers: named, quoted and linked, not just ranked somewhere below them.
This guide explains what that work involves, how it differs from the SEO you may already pay for, and how to tell a capable agency from one that has simply added “AI” to its old package.
What changed in search
Two things changed at once.
First, the answer moved above the results. For informational searches such as “what is carpet area” or “how long does SEO take”, Google often summarises several sources in an AI Overview. The page ranking fourth may get fewer clicks than it used to, while the pages cited inside the overview get the attention.
Second, research moved into conversations. A buyer might ask an assistant which developers in Bhubaneswar have ready-to-move 3 BHK flats, then follow up with three more questions about price, possession and location. The assistant builds its answers from pages it can crawl and trust. If your site is not one of them, you are not part of that conversation.
Transactional searches still behave much as they did. Someone typing “buy 3 BHK in Patia” still sees ads, listings and local results. That is why AI search sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it.
What an AI SEO agency actually does
The labels vary: AI SEO, generative engine optimisation (GEO), answer engine optimisation (AEO). The work underneath is largely the same.
Makes the site readable for search engines and AI crawlers
Google’s documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. So the first job is ordinary technical SEO done properly: crawlable pages, clean indexing, fast mobile performance and no accidental blocks.
For assistants outside Google, crawler access matters too. OpenAI, for example, uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search, and a separate one, GPTBot, to collect training data. A careful agency checks your robots.txt file and firewall rules so you do not block the crawler that sends visitors while trying to block the one that trains models.
Writes pages that answer questions directly
AI answers tend to quote passages that respond to a question in a few clear sentences, backed by detail. In practice that means:
- a direct answer at the start of each section, not after three paragraphs of preamble
- specifics a generic page cannot copy: price ranges, timelines, locations, sizes and process steps
- headings phrased the way people ask, such as “How long does registration take?”
- FAQs built from real sales and support questions, not invented ones
Builds trust signals that can be checked
Google’s guidance on helpful content says trust is the most important part of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. For a business, trust shows up as named authors, consistent business details across the web, genuine reviews, mentions in relevant publications and structured data that matches what the page says. Schema will not earn a citation on its own, and Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, but accurate markup helps search engines understand who you are and what you offer.
Maps the questions around a purchase
Keyword research still matters. An AI SEO agency goes further and maps the questions buyers ask on the way to a decision: comparisons, costs, objections and “is it worth it” queries. Each question gets a clear home on the site, and related pages link to each other so the whole topic is covered.
Measures visibility, not just rankings
A ranking report does not show whether you were cited. Expect the agency to track a fixed set of priority queries and prompts, record where your brand appears in AI Overviews and assistants, watch referral visits from sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics, and connect all of it to enquiries.
How AI SEO differs from traditional SEO
| Area | Traditional SEO focus | AI SEO focus |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in the results | Be cited or recommended in the answer |
| Unit of content | The whole page | Passages that answer one question well |
| Research | Keywords and search volume | Keywords plus the questions and follow-ups around them |
| Authority | Backlinks | Links, brand mentions, reviews and consistent business details |
| Reporting | Positions and organic traffic | Citations, AI referral visits, organic traffic and enquiries |
The foundations overlap heavily. An agency that cannot do technical and on-page SEO well will not do AI SEO well either.
Proof from our own work
A real estate developer came to us already holding first-page rankings for its key searches. The next goal was visibility in Google AI Overviews, alongside more organic traffic and better leads. We took over keyword research and mapping, on-page optimisation, the topical content structure, search intent alignment, technical fixes and structured data, all shaped around how AI results select sources. Within six months the brand ranked for 25+ high-value keywords across AI Overviews and page one. The details are in the real estate AI Overviews case study.
How to choose an AI SEO agency
Questions to ask before you sign
- How will you measure AI visibility? Look for a named list of queries and prompts, a method for checking citations and a link to enquiries. A single “AI score” from a tool is not enough on its own.
- What will you change on my site in the first 60 days? A capable team names specific technical fixes, pages to rewrite and pages to create.
- Who writes the content, and how do you use AI tools? Using AI to research or draft is fine. Publishing pages in bulk without real expertise risks breaching Google’s scaled content abuse policy and rarely earns citations.
- Can you show work in my industry? Real estate, healthcare and local services each have different questions and trust signals.
- Who owns the accounts and content? Search Console, analytics, Google Business Profile and every page written should belong to you.
Red flags
- Guaranteed placement in AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers. No agency controls what these systems cite.
- “Special AI files” sold as the main deliverable. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in its AI features.
- Hundreds of AI-written pages a month with no subject expert involved.
- Reports full of AI “mentions” with no link to traffic or enquiries.
When it makes sense to invest
AI SEO pays off fastest when three things are true: buyers research before they contact you, your category involves questions and comparisons, and your site is already in reasonable technical health. Real estate, healthcare, education, B2B services and considered consumer purchases fit that pattern well.
If your site has indexing problems or thin service pages, fix those first. That work helps both rankings and AI citations, and it is usually the quickest win. Our SEO services cover that foundation. If your buyers search by city or neighbourhood, local SEO belongs in the plan too, because your Google Business Profile and reviews shape what people see when they look for a business near them.
Expect technical fixes and rewritten pages to show movement in 6 to 12 weeks, and meaningful AI visibility over four to six months. Competitive categories in large cities take longer. For a closer look at how we approach this work, see our AI SEO services, or real estate SEO if you are a developer.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI SEO agency?
An AI SEO agency helps a business appear inside AI-generated answers, such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, as well as in normal search results. The work combines technical SEO, content written to answer specific questions, structured data and trust signals such as reviews and mentions, with reporting on citations, AI referral traffic and enquiries.
Is AI SEO different from GEO and AEO?
Mostly in name. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) describe the same goal: being the source an AI answer draws on. Some agencies use AEO for featured snippets and voice answers and GEO for generative tools, but the methods overlap heavily. Ask what work is included rather than which label is used.
Can an agency guarantee my business will appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google and the companies behind AI assistants decide which sources to cite, and those choices change with each query and each model update. An honest agency commits to the work, to transparent tracking of a fixed set of queries, and to agreed targets for traffic and enquiries. Treat any guarantee of AI placement as a warning sign.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema to show up in AI search?
Not for Google. Its documentation says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard schema that accurately describes your business still helps search engines understand your pages, but crawler access, indexing and clear, specific content matter far more than any single file.
How long does AI SEO take to show results?
Technical fixes and rewritten pages can show movement within 6 to 12 weeks. Consistent visibility in AI Overviews and assistants usually takes four to six months, because it depends on content depth and trust signals built over time. In one of our real estate projects, the brand reached 25+ high-value keywords across AI Overviews and page one within six months.
